Modern Foreign Languages
At Abbotskerswell Primary School, we believe that learning a modern foreign language broadens pupils’ horizons, develops cultural awareness and strengthens communication skills. Through the teaching of French, children gain confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in another language while developing a curiosity about the wider world.
A particular focus of our MFL curriculum is oracy. We recognise that the ability to communicate clearly and confidently is a vital life skill. Through regular opportunities to practise spoken French, children develop their pronunciation, vocabulary, listening skills and confidence in speaking aloud. Lessons encourage pupils to engage in conversations, ask and answer questions, perform short presentations and use language in meaningful contexts.
Our Modern Foreign Languages Lead is Mrs Nikki Peters, who teaches French across the whole of Key Stage 2.
To support high-quality teaching and progression across the school, we use the Kapow Primary French Scheme, which provides a structured and engaging curriculum that builds pupils’ knowledge and language skills year on year.
What We Learn
During Key Stage 2, pupils learn a range of French vocabulary and language structures through topics including:
- Numbers and Colours
- Greetings and Introductions
- Parts of the Body
- Clothes
- Food and Drink
- Classroom Objects
As pupils progress through the school, they develop their ability to understand spoken and written French, communicate ideas, ask and answer questions, and appreciate the similarities and differences between French and English language and culture.
Our aim is for every child to leave Abbotskerswell Primary School with a positive attitude towards language learning, confidence in communicating with others, and a foundation that will support further language study in secondary school.
