Abbotskerswell governing body is an experienced group of volunteers with representatives from the parent body, teaching staff and local community. Together we help set the strategic vision and direction for the school, support with the appointment of senior staff, keep an overview of finance and resources and act as a critical friend, ensuring that the highest standards are attained in all that the school does.
In all types of schools, governing bodies should have a strong focus on three core strategic functions:
Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
The minutes of the Full Governing Board meetings are available on request from the office.
Who are we?
The Governing Body consists of:
The Head Teacher
1 Elected Staff Governor
1 Appointed Local Authority Governor

A Review of the 2018-19 Academic Year by Jenny Hersey, Chair of Governors
What a year last year (2018/19) has been. In September 2018 began with myself becoming the new chair, Marie Farrelly as the new clerk and welcoming three new governors. In addition we appointed Mr Chidler, Mrs Miller, Mrs Harper, Mrs Pearson and two new guinea pigs to our school. In December 2018 we said goodbye to Mr Hughes, our headteacher of seven years. In January we welcomed our new Head Teacher, Mr Martin. Seven days into Mr Martin’s headship Ofsted came knocking at our door but we were thrilled to retain our ‘Good’ judgement.
The rest of the school year was then filled with great experiences for our children including two wonderful drama productions, exciting residentials, inspiring nature school sessions, various children’s clubs, a fun packed sports day and numerous educational and fun visits and visitors, all ending with a very successful Summer Fayre organised by our dedicated PTFA.
To top it all in 2019 we achieved the best year 6 SATs results we have ever had. I am extremely proud of our school community which includes our fantastic staff and governors who go above and beyond in everything they do, all the parents and carers that support the school in so many ways and not least of all our children who are happy and eager to learn.
Now looking forward to 2019/20 school year I’m sure you are aware from Mr Martin of all the exciting improvements to the school, including, improvements to the EYFS outside area, the playground and our fabulous new Library, which was so beautifully improved over the summer by some very hard working volunteers, in particular Charlotte Williams and Sally Rideout.
In September 2019 the Governing Board has had to say goodbye to our staff governor Mrs Kerswell, who has given up her time to be the voice of staff on the Governing Board for the last four years. Mr Chidler has now taken up the role and we welcome him on board. The Governors are pleased to announce the successful recruitment of a new LA Governor, Nick Illston, who brings his knowledge and skills in outdoor education, sales and marketing and leadership coaching to the Governors.
Over the year we will be keeping you informed of what we are doing by regularly posting our visits in the weekly newsletter.
Thank you to everyone who volunteers to sit on the Governing Board. It is a big commitment of your time and energy and the school does appreciate everything you do behind the scenes.
